Bill Badini, Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM)- Meteorologist

Bill Badini's professional experience began with his Bachelors degree in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) in 1995.   He remained at UW to receive a Master’s Degree in the same major in 1999.  While at UW, Badini acted as the assistant chief forecaster for the NSF-funded Lake ICE/SNOWBANDS project. His roles were focused primarily on short and longer-range forecasts for aircraft and ground operations for intense observation periods (IOP) for lake-effect and large-scale storm snowfall.  His Masters’ Thesis was focused on the effects of satellite derived wind vectors on numerical model forecasts of tropical storms.

After departing UW, Bill moved to Denver, CO where he worked as a consultant for Henz Meteorological Services (owned by HDR-Atmospheric Science Group Senior Project Manager John Henz).  While with HMS, Bill worked on forensic reconstructions and flash-flood forecasting for clients before taking a position as a Senior Meteorologist with Aquila Merchant Services in Kansas City.  At Aquila, his duties included acting as the lead forecaster for a large energy and weather derivative trading desk.  From this experience he gained a vast amount of knowledge of energy operations and futures markets.

The current leg of Bills’ career at HDR started in August of 2002 when he decided to re-join John Henz in the Atmospheric Sciences Group (ASG) in Denver.  One of the prime reasons for joining HDR was his interest in hydro-meteorology.  In his current capacity, Bill works as a project meteorologist and project manager on a variety of topics including radar-rainfall reconstructions, extreme precipitation storm analysis and design storms for floodplain delineation and criteria standards.  Additional areas of expertise in hydro-meteorology include the increasingly critical area of water supply including detailed analyses on the connection between climate indices and seasonal precipitation/runoff including creating customized products and forecasts in this area so that clients can use the climate to their advantage rather than disadvantage.

In addition, there are a number of forensic projects that Bill has acted as project meteorologist or project manager on including detailed analyses for a variety of clients ranging in both the public and private sector.  As a result of his experience he has built extensive expertise in the ability to find and refine atmospheric and hydrological data from conventional and unconventional sources efficiently.  In summary, if the challenge facing a client involves weather or climate then Mr. Badini sincerely relishes the opportunity to solve it.
