Mike McMahon – Senior Project Meteorologist
Atmospheric Science Group Leader

Mr. Mike McMahon has more than 24 years experience applying science and technology solutions in his expertise as a meteorologist/atmospheric scientist. He has specialized scientific expertise in forecasting micro/mesoscale weather and atmospheric events for use by government, energy, aviation and aerospace industries, among others. Besides his global forecast modeling specialization, he has supported IT applications as well as the installation and troubleshooting of computer and atmospheric monitoring hardware. He has been an invited speaker and given presentations on meteorological and atmospheric topics at industry forums and educational institutions. Mike has been a frequent award winner for professional services provided to his employers. These awards have resulted from innovative approaches and commitments that have led to increased customer satisfaction and better efficiencies and cost savings in operations.

During his 22 years with Lockheed, Jeppesen, and Boeing, Mike performed a wide variety of meteorological tasks from 24 hour forecasting for a record breaking non-refueled flight around the world to forecasting for the President of the United States on several occasions to providing forecast information to the launch of the Space Shuttle to analyzing upper level flow patterns of the ash cloud emitted by Mt. Pinatubo.   Mike also maintained a part-time job from 1989-2005 as “Meteorologist Mike” on San Francisco Bay Area radio.

Mike’s passion for the science of weather came out his love of the outdoors.  Mike grew up hiking, fishing and camping in the mountains of California.  Having a knowledge of the weather was just as important to a good time as it was to survival.   His 47 years of living, forecasting, and enjoying the weather of the western U.S.  has giving him a deep insight into the understanding of the region’s environment.

In 2006, Mike and his family, decided to redirect their lives in search of an all encompassing change. Mike signed on with HDR in August of 2007, after a move to Denver, CO earlier in the year.   Mike’s passion for meteorology and  his need to help people understand the weather fit well into the culture of the Atmospheric Sciences Group at HDR.   He is currently Senior Meteorologist working on a variety of projects from Flood Warning Systems to Water Supply Forecasting to Flood Threat Forecasting.
